L’insegnamento si propone come corso avanzato di Storia dei Media dedicato al caso del medium televisivo. Obiettivi formativi
Attraverso l’analisi del caso del medium televisivo - nella prospettiva propria della Storia dei Media - l’insegnamento si propone di consolidare nelle/negli studenti la capacità di:
- cogliere criticamente gli aspetti di specificità che segnano l’operare storico (e, quindi, attuale) di ogni medium;
- riconoscere il convergere nel dibattito attuale (scientifico, professionale, e culturale) delle diverse tradizioni interpretative che storicamente hanno concorso a definire la specificità dell’azione storica dei media;
- padroneggiare i concetti di Sistema dei Media e di Matrice dei Media, applicandoli alla comprensione di alcuni semplici casi di studio;
- riconoscere la rilevanza e la pertinenza delle dimensioni di genere nei processi della comunicazione mediata.Through an in-depth study of the medium of Television as a case study of media history, the teaching aims to consolidate students' ability to:
- critically understand the specificity of the historical action of each medium;
- recognise the co-presence, in the current scientific, professional and cultural debate, of the different interpretative traditions that have historically defined the specificity of the historical action of the media;
- use the two key concepts of media history: Media System and Media Matrix;
- recognise the relevance of gender factors in mediated communication.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi
Al termine delle lezioni la studentessa/lo studente avrà chiara cognizione:
- dell’evoluzione storica degli studi sulla televisione nei loro rapporti con il campo degli studi di media e comunicazione, con particolare riferimento all’intreccio teorico e istituzionale tra le diverse discipline scientifiche che di esso partecipano (sociologia, economia, semiotica, informatica, storia, studi politici, psicologia, ecc.);
- delle due principali tradizioni interpretative che oggi insistono sull'analisi del medium televisivo, così come dei media in generale (Medium come Strumento atto a trasferire contenuti vs. Medium come Estensione del soggetto);
- delle principali scansioni dell'evoluzione tecnologica del medium televisivo e delle molteplici configurazioni storiche (politico-istituzionali, economico-produttive, cultural-antropologiche) da esso assunte nel Sistema dei Media dei paesi industrializzati tra gli anni Trenta e oggi.
Sulla base delle conoscenze acquisite, la/lo studente sarà in grado di riconoscere:
- la differenza tra cronologia storica (della televisione) e storia (della televisione);
- la differenza tra storia (della televisione) e storiografia (sulla televisione);
- la rilevanza degli aspetti teorici che fondano l'interpretazione dei fenomeni, storici e attuali, nel campo della comunicazione e dei media;
- il ruolo giocato nella selezione dei momenti/eventi/aspetti significativi della storia del medium (televisivo) dall'impianto teorico-concettuale che guida l'analisi;
- le diverse modalità di azione attribuite dagli studiosi/dalle studiose ai contenuti televisivi nelle diverse fasi, e configurazioni, della storia del mezzo televisivo (programmi televisivi, video-lezioni, registrazioni live di riunioni istituzionali, video sorveglianza, ecc.)
At the end of the teaching, students will have a clear understanding of:
- the historical development of television studies in relation to the field of media and communication studies, with particular reference to the theoretical and institutional links between the various scientific disciplines involved (sociology, economics, semiotics, informatics, history, political science, psychology, etc.);
- the two main interpretative traditions that today insist on analysing the medium of television, as well as the media in general (medium as an instrument for transmitting content vs. medium as an extension);
- the main scans of the technological evolution of the medium of television and of the multiple historical configurations (political-institutional, economic-productive, cultural-anthropological) that it has assumed in the media system of the industrialised countries between the 1930s and today.
On the basis of the knowledge acquired, the student will be able to recognise:
- the difference between historical chronology (of television) and history (of television);
- the difference between the history (of television) and the historiography (of television);
- the relevance of the theoretical aspects that underpin the interpretation of phenomena, both historical and contemporary, in the field of communication and the media;
- the role played by the theoretical-conceptual framework guiding the analysis in the selection of significant moments/events/aspects in the history of the medium (television);
- the different forms of action attributed by scholars to television content in the different phases and configurations of the history of the medium of television (television programmes, video lectures, live recordings of institutional meetings, video surveillance, etc.).

Titolo: Che senso ha la televisione? La “morte” della Televisione e le nuove declinazioni della tecnologia tele-visiva tra Sistema dei Media e Matrice dei Media.Media, soggetti sessuati, e mutamento.
Descrizione sintetica:
L’insegnamento affronterà l’analisi del medium televisivo nella prospettiva propria della Storia dei Media, a partire dall’esame delle profonde discontinuità che hanno segnato la sua azione storica a seguito della transizione (1999-2012) dal segnale analogico (Televisione) al segnale digitale (tele-visione), considerate nelle loro rilevanze sociali, economiche, politiche, e culturali.
Prima parte: analisi critica e storica dei fondamenti teorici e concettuali delle due tradizioni interpretative che qualificano oggi la fase presente della storia del medium televisivo, rispettivamente, come “età del trionfo della Televisione” e “età della morte/fine della Televisione”.
Seconda parte: approfondimento sulle dimensioni di storicità che segnano il rapporto tra soggetti sessuati e media, con specifico riferimento al modo in cui esso viene oggi declinato dalle due tradizioni interpretative esaminate nella prima parte dell’insegnamento.
L’analisi riguarderà, di necessità, sia il caso della Televisione (per come essa viene intesa dalla prima tradizione di studi), sia il caso delle molteplici configurazioni attuali della tecnologia tele-visiva in rete (streaming di contenuti audiovisivi autoprodotti, streaming di contenuti audiovisivi di produzione industriale, videoconferenze, videolezioni, videochiamate, videosorveglianza, ecc.).
In questo contesto, particolare attenzione sarà dedicata all’analisi dei mutamenti dello statuto del testo mediale (e tele-visivo, in particolare) in relazione alla storicità dei mutamenti della configurazione tecnologica del medium.
Programma d’esame
Il programma d’esame si compone di tre parti (punti 1+2+3):
1) Le lezioni (La conoscenza del lavoro sviluppato in aula durante le lezioni è alla base del programma d'esame. Tutte le lezioni saranno registrate in aula e caricate sulla piattaforma Moodle)
2) Dispensa (Gruppo di articoli/capitoli di saggi utilizzati a lezione. Tutti i testi della Dispensa saranno caricati dalla docente nella sezione “Materiali didattici” dell’insegnamento --> vd. icona a forma di baule del tesoro al fondo di questa pagina).
3) Un volume a scelta dalla lista che verrà pubblicata qui in prossimità dell'inizio delle lezioni.

Title: How Television makes sense? The ‘death’ of Television and the new declinations of tele-visual technology between Media System and Media Matrix. Media, gendered subjects, and change.
Short Description:
The teching will approach the analysis of the medium of television from the perspective of media history, starting with an examination of the profound discontinuities that have marked its historical action following the transition (1999-2012) from the analogue signal (Television) to the digital signal (tele-vision), considered in their social, economic, political and cultural relevance.
Part One: critical and historical analysis of the theoretical and conceptual foundations of the two interpretative traditions that qualify the present phase of the history of the medium of television as the "age of the triumph of Television" and the "age of the death/end of Television," respectively.
Part Two: In-depth study of the dimensions of historicity that shape the relationship between gendered subjects and the media, with specific reference to the way it is qualified today by the two interpretative traditions examined in the first part of the teaching.
The analysis will necesarily cover both the case of Television (as it is understood by the first tradition of studies) and the case of the multiple actual configurations of networked tele-visual technology (streaming of self-produced audiovisual content, streaming of industrially produced audiovisual content, video conferencing, video lectures, video calls, video surveillance, etc.).
In this context, special attention will be paid to the analysis of the changing status of the media text (and the tele-visual one, in particular) in relation to the historicity of changes in the technological configuration of the medium.
Examination programme
The examination programme consists of three parts (points 1+2+3):
1) The lectures (The knowledge of the work developed in the classroom during the lectures is the basis for the examination programme. All lectures will be recorded in the classroom and uploaded to the Moodle platform)

Modalità di insegnamento
L’insegnamento si compone di 18 lezioni, di due ore ciascuna (TOT. 36 h. /6 CFU). Le lezioni si terranno in presenza. Essendo le lezioni in aula parte costitutiva del programma d’esame, esse verranno registrate e pubblicate sulla piattaforma Moodle dell’insegnamento, al fine di permettere alle/agli studenti di rivederle/riascoltarle, nella fase di preparazione dell’esame, verificando la coerenza e correttezza degli appunti presi in aula.
Le lezioni si baseranno su una stretta e continua interlocuzione con le/gli studenti, cui sarà richiesto di partecipare attivamente alla discussione in aula. Ogni lezione si aprirà con un riassunto del lavoro svolto in aula nella lezione precedente basato su quanto di esso ricordano le/gli studenti presenti: ciò permetterà di evidenziare i temi chiave affrontati, e di riprendere le fila della riflessione condivisa.
Tale modalità didattica ha come scopo principale il sostegno allo sviluppo nella/nello studente di una disposizione critica e autoriflessiva nei confronti dei temi affrontati a lezione, delle conoscenze apprese, e della propria esperienza d'uso dei media.
Nel corso delle lezioni verranno presentati i testi d’esame, evidenziando per ciascuno di essi la sua pertinenza al lavoro svolto in aula.
Tutti i materiali utilizzati durante le lezioni in aula (a stampa, sonori, audiovisivi) saranno caricati sulla piattaforma Moodle.
The teaching consists of 18 lectures of two hours each (TOT. 36 h./6 CFU). Lectures will be given in presence. Since the lectures are part of the examination programme, they will be recorded and published on the Moodle platform of the course, so that students can listen to them during the examination preparation phase and check the coherence and correctness of the personal notes taken in class.
The lessons will be based on a close and continuous dialogue with the students, who will be asked to actively participate in the class discussion. Each lesson will begin with a summary of the work done in the classroom during the previous lesson, based on the recollections of the students present: this will make it possible to highlight the main issues raised and to pick up the threads of shared reflection.
The main aim of this teaching method is to support the development of a critical and self-reflective attitude in the students towards the topics raised in the lectures, the knowledge acquired and their own experience of media use.
The examination texts will be presented in class with reference to their relevance to class work.
All materials used in class (print, audio, audiovisual) will be uploaded onto the Moodle platform.- Oggetto:
Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
La verifica dell'apprendimento ha lo scopo di valutare se, e in quale misura, gli obiettivi proposti dall'insegnamento siano stati raggiunti dalla/dallo studente.
La verifica, cioè l’esame, consiste di un colloquio orale sul lavoro svolto durante le lezioni e sui testi indicati dal programma d'esame. La valutazione, espressa in trentesimi, considererà:
- la conoscenza puntuale dei contenuti delle lezioni e dei testi d’esame;
- la comprensione della struttura generale del lavoro svolto in aula e, in relazione ad essa, la capacità della/dello studente di inquadrare criticamente i singoli temi affrontati, facendo riferimento ai testi d'esame (Domande di esempio: Com’è stata strutturata la riflessione che abbiamo condiviso nel corso delle lezioni? In quali lezioni abbiamo affrontato il tema trattato da questo autore?);
- la comprensione della struttura argomentativa dei singoli testi d’esame (Domande di esempio: Com’è strutturato questo saggio/articolo? Quale domanda si pone l’autore/l’autrice? Come l’autore/l’autrice sviluppa la sua riflessione su questo argomento?);
- il corretto inquadramento storico e critico del pensiero delle/degli autrici/autori dei testi studiati (Domande di esempio: Chi è l’autore di questo studio/articolo/saggio? Chi sono i suoi interlocutori, reali o ideali? A quale tradizione di studi fa riferimento? Quando è stato pubblicato questo testo? A quale fase della storia della televisione si riferisce?)
- il corretto utilizzo della lingua italiana e la padronanza della terminologia di base.
The purpose of the examination is to assess whether and to what extent the student has achieved the teaching objectives.
The examination consists of an oral interview on the topics covered in the lectures and by the examination texts.
The assessment is expressed on a 30/30 basis.
The assessment will take into account the student's accurate knowledge of the topics covered in the lecture and the content of the examination texts.
The assessment will include:
- the understanding of the argumentative structure linking the topics covered in the lecture (example question: How was the course structured?)
- the ability to critically situate the arguments developed by the authors of the examination texts in the context of the reflections developed in the course of the lectures (example question: In which part of the course did we deal with the topic addressed by the author of this essay?)
- understanding of the argumentative structure of each examination text (example question: How is this essay/article structured? How does the author develop his ideas on the main topic of his essay?)
- the ability to contextualise - historically and critically - the thought of the authors of the texts studied (example questions: Who is the author of this study/article? Who is the author of this study/article/essay? Who are his real or ideal interlocutors? Which tradition of studies does the author refer to? When was the text published? To which period in the history of television does it refer?)
