Aims of the lectures are (a) Providing updated knowledge on the main research areas of the general psychology, (b) Promoting a critical comprehension of the acquired knowledge as well as (c) Favoring an autonomous thinking on the topics covered.

Each student is expected to:

a) Demonstrate knowledge of the course content.

b) Identify and apply fields of application for the theoretical knowledge acquired.

c) Think critically and flexibly about the topics covered in the course.

d) Clearly and comprehensively present the knowledge acquired.

e) Contextualize and generalize the knowledge gained.

Effective communication requires a solid understanding of the cognitive processes that govern how individuals perceive and process information, as well as how they interact with others and their surrounding environment. The course will provide an overview of the main cognitive functions (e.g., memory, attention, perception, reasoning, motivation, emotion, language), with particular emphasis on the theoretical models underlying their operation and their practical applications.

The evaluation of students' preparation will be conducted through an oral exam aimed at assessing their understanding of the main topics in general psychology. Specifically, the oral exam will evaluate the ability to think critically about the covered topics, knowledge of key psychological concepts, and the use of language reflecting a thorough comprehension of the subject matter.

It will be possible to take the oral exam in English.

Each student will also have the option to take a written pre-test, valid for one academic year. The pre-test will consist of 31 multiple-choice questions (4 options each), and the grade will be expressed in thirtieths. Each correct answer will be awarded 1 point, while incorrect or unanswered questions will receive 0 points. Students will have 30 minutes to complete the pre-test.

The pre-test results will be published anonymously on the course’s Moodle page (by student ID number), and each student will also receive the results via their institutional email address (@edu.unito.it).

(a) If the grade obtained in the written pre-test is satisfactory (≥ 18/30), students must confirm whether they accept or decline the grade by replying to the received email using their institutional email address (@edu.unito.it). Accepting the grade means that the grade will be officially recorded during one of the exam sessions without the need to take the oral exam.

(b) If the grade obtained in the pre-test is not satisfactory (<18), or if students choose not to accept the grade, or if they did not take the pre-test, the assessment of their knowledge will be conducted through an oral exam during one of the exam sessions.

Students are reminded that, in all cases mentioned above, it is MANDATORY to register for one of the exam sessions.

Additionally, it is important to note that the pre-test is valid for one academic year only.

Both the oral exam and the pre-test will be based on the reference textbook and the material presented during lectures, with no distinction between attending and non-attending students.
